DistributionMalaysia (Pulau Pangkor, Pulau Tioman, Pulau Langkawi, Pulau Singa Besar, Johor: Pulau Sibu, Borneo),
S Myanmar (= Burma) (Tenasserim), S Thailand, W Malaysia, Singapore, India (Andaman and Nicobar Islands), Philippines (Palawan, Calamian Islands, Panay, Luzon, Mindanao, Sulu, Cebu, Bohol, Leyte, Negros, Samar, Mindoro, Masbate), Indonesia (Halmahera, Sumatra, Morotai, Natuna islands etc.), Papua New Guinea

Type locality: not given by KUHL.

Type locality: “Kandari nel S.E. di Selebes” [= Kendari, Sulawesi, Indonesia] [Bronchocela intermedia PETERS & DORIA 1878].
Reproductionoviparous
TypesLectotype (iconotype): Seba (1734: plate 89 figure 1 (designated by Figueroa 2021); this is a lectotype designation for both A. cristatella and Agama gutturosa.
Holotype: lost fide Brygoo 1988 but Das & Gemel 2000 suggested that KUHL based his name on MNHN 6884 (three syntypes). Other specimens: RMNH, ZFMK, ZMH, MZB, ZSM
Holotype: NMW 21002: 1-2 [archiducissae]
DiagnosisDiagnosis (genus): Bronchocela species are slender, medium sized (SVL about 80–140 mm) with long tails TL/SVL 3,2–3,9, laterally compressed body and relatively long legs. The genus can be separated from all other draconinae genera by a fold of skin that extends from the angle of the jaw to the insertion of the upper arm; homogeny lateral scales rhombic and small, point backwards and downwards, ventral scales greater; tympanum naked; nuchal crest present, lower dorsal crest sometimes reduced to a serrated ridge; spines on the head absent (U. Manthey, pers. comm., 3 Aug 2021).
CommentDistribution: According to SMITH 1935 not on New Guinea. See map in Amarasinghe et al. 2022: 411 (Fig. 1)

Type species: Agama gutturosa MERREM 1820 is the type species of the genus Bronchocela KAUP 1827: 619, designated by Fitzinger 1843 (not A. cristatella, as sometime stated in the literature, see Figueroa 2021 for a discussion).

Synonymy: Boulenger (1880) synonymized B. burmana with Calotes cristatellus but Zug et al. 2017 revalidated Bronchocela burmana again. Bronchocela intermedia PETERS & DORIA 1878 is a junior homonym of B. intermedia BERTHOLD 1842.

The Bronchocela cristatella mentoned in ter Borg (2005) is probably B. jubata (ter Borg 2007).

Comparisons: for a comparison of diagnostic characters across the species of Bronchocela see Amarasinghe et al. 2022: 73 (Table 3), Amarasinghe et al. 2022: 417 (Table 3). Chandramouli et al. 2023: 505 (Table 2) compare the species on the Nicobar islands and B. cristatella.

Key to the species of Bronchocela: Amarasinghe et al. 2022: 420.
