Two finds in waters of Russia are known: in the Barents Sea's Kolsky Bay and in the Sea of Japan's Peter the Great Bay (fide KHALIKOV, pers. comm.)

Type locality: “Insulas Americanas”, Restricted to "Mari Mediterraneo, Atlantico" by Schoepff (1793a:70); to "Bermuda Islands" by Smith and Taylor (1950a:315, 1950b:16); and to "Bimini, British Bahamas" by Schmidt (1953:107).  
Reproductionoviparous. FRITZ (1995) and Lara-Ruiz et al. 2006 report hybrids between Caretta caretta and Eretmochelys imbricata. BARBER et al. (2003) and Pfaller et al. 2019 confirmed natural hybridization between a Kemp’s ridley (Lepidochelys kempii) and loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta) by molecular analysis. Koo et al. (2014) report hybrids between Chelonia mydas and Caretta caretta (see also NCBI taxID 2305479). Exhibits temperature‐dependent sex determination (TSD) fide Cornejo-Páramo et al. 2020 (and references therein). Clutch size: 107-120 (Fitch 1985).

CommentSynonymy: According to BRONGERSMA (1961) Caretta caretta gigas is a synonym of Caretta caretta.

Habitat: marine. Several studies have shown that loggerheads find their home nesting sites using the magnetic field of the earth (e.g. Brothers & Lohmann 2015).

Distribution: not in Gabon fide Pauwels, pers. comm. 25 Apr 2019. No confirmed records from Gujarat fide Patel & Vyas 2019. See Bar et al. 2021 for a map.

Conservation status: endangered

Type species: Caretta nasuta RAFINESQUE 1814 is the type species of the genus Caretta RAFINESQUE 1814: 66. 
EtymologyThe species was named after the genus.

The genus (and species name) Caretta is a latinization of the French word caret (carey in Spanish and English), meaning turtle, tortoise, or sea turtle.
