CommentDistribution: KAHL et al. 1980 stated that Geochelone chilensis occurs in Uruguay too. The original type locality mentioned “Chile” but the species does not occur in Chile.

Synonymy: after Van Dijk et al. 2012. WERMUTH & MERTENS (1977: 77) as well as FRITZ & HAVAS (2007: 269) listed Geochelone petersi as a synonym of Geochelone chilensis. 
EtymologyNamed after the original, but wrong type locality.
