Reproductionviviparous. 
TypesHolotype: ZSM (lost), from the original type locality of “Ecgá”, correct original spelling being “Ega”, at present Tefé, state of Amazonas, Brazil (Ávila-Pires 1995). Neotype: MPEG 15248, Santa Rita, Município de Maraã, left margin of Rio Japurá (Lago Paricá), state of Amazonas, Brazil (Ávila-Pires 1995). 
CommentSynonymy: Until recently often erroneously called Mabuya bistriata (see comment in Avila-Pires 1995 for details). Has been considered as synonymous to Mabuya mabouya (e.g. by PETERS & DONOSO-BARROS 1970: 199).

Distribution: has been revised and restricted by Hedges & Conn 2012. May not be completely revised yet.

Type species: Copeoglossum cinctum Tschudi 1845:162 (= Copeoglossum nigropunctatum) is the type species of the genus Copeoglossum Tschudi 1845. 
EtymologyThe generic name (Copeoglossum) is a neuter noun, derived from the Greek nouns kopeus (chisel) and glossa (tongue), in allusion to the shape of the tongue.
