Type locality: “about 55 km SW México [City], neaer Tres Marias (Tres Cumbres), Morelos, elevation about 10,000 feet”. Corrected to „Laguna Zempoala, state of México“ by DAVIS & SMITH (1953)

Nomenclature: Hoser’s 2009 classification and nomenclature has been rejected as unnecessary and unavailable by WÜSTER & BERNILS 2011.

Conservation: one of the 30 most endangered viper species (Maritz et al. 2016). 
EtymologyNamed after Latin transversus, lying across/from side to side. [“...34-38 narrow, transverse black stripes on body...”].
