Etymology | According to COPE 1862 "This species is dedicated to my friend, Dr. H.C. Wood, Jr., author of memoirs on Myriapoda and ... Cryptogamia." C. v. aterrimus was named after Latin aterrima = "black or dark colored". C. v. picticeps was named after Latin pictus, painted; colored; decorated, and Latin caput, -ceps = head. C. v. raineyi was named after Mr. Froelich Rainey of the Peabody Museum of Yale University who made so many noteworthy discoveries in the caves of the Bahama Islands while he was archeologist on board the Utowana during her 1934 cruise. C. v. utowanae was named after the research Yacht Utowana. |
