DiagnosisDiagnosis: Small lizard, different from specimens of nominative subspecies by the larger size of pileus, higher values of width and height of head, reduced number of scales between the rows of femoral pores. Animals are colored in chocolate-brown tones; on each side of body under light bar the interrupted dark stripe, or row of spots; always contrasting color pattern, the color in life of lateral ventrals is goldish-pink.
CommentSubspecies: Darevskia praticola pontica is now considered a valid species. Darevskia praticola hungarica (SOBOLEWSKY 1930) may be a subspecies of D. pontica (Doronin, pers. comm. 5 Jul 2016). SABERI-PIROOZ et al. 2018 suggested to synonymize loriensis with hyrcanica. Doronin 2016 found that pontica was described in 1918 not 1919 as often cited.

Synonymy: primarily after Stugren 1984 and Doronin 2016. Freitas et al. 2016 suggested to synonymize pontica with praticola. We maintin pontica as subspecies following the argument of Speybroeck et al. 2020.

Distribution: D. praticola is not in Romania, but pontica is. See maps in Doronin 2015. See map in SMID et al. 2014 for distribution in Iran.

NCBI taxonID: 1592832 [pontica]

Etymology (hyranica). A subspecies is named after the ancient name of the Caspian sea (Hyrcania) and province south-east of Caspian Sea, which is a base for the name of Hyrcan biogeographical province, including Talysh, Lenkoran lowland and Caspian slope of Western Alburz (the area of distribution of the described subspecies).
