Diagnosis | Diagnosis: Dierogekko thomaswhitei can be distinguished from all congeners on the basis of the following combination of characters: size relatively large (to 44.9 mm SVL), 1 internasal scale; distal subdigital lamellae divided; male preanal pores in two rows (12–14 in anterior row, 1–5 in posterior row). Narrow beige and dark brown longitudinal stripes vague, cream markings coalesce over forelimb insertion, sacrum, and tail base; dorsal surface of head darker than lateral. |
Comment | CONSERVATIONSTATUS.—Under favorable weather conditions, D. thomaswhitei were abundant on shrubby vegetation above the Gomen Mine and were present at mid-elevations as well. The area harbors the introduced Rattus rattus, and deer, feral cats, and pigs are numerous at lower elevations. The mine was inactive at the time of our visits to the site, but it has since been reopened by the Société Minière du Sud Pacifique (SMSP) and posses a potential threat to the habitat of this species. Although this gecko may also occur on adjacent peaks within the massif, we regard it as Critically Endangered. Abundance: only known from the type locality (Meiri et al. 2017). |
Etymology | The specific epithet is a patronym honoring Dr. Thomas White, through whose generosity the automated sequencer used in our molecular phylogenetic analyses of the New Caledonian lizard fauna was obtained. The name is masculine and is formed in the genitive singular. |
