DistributionBulgaria, E Turkey (Adiyaman Province etc.), Iraq, W Iran, former S USSR (between Black and Caspian Seas), Lebanon,
Dagestan (S Russia), SE Republic of Georgia, S Armenia, Azerbaijan

macrospilotus: Turkey. Type locality: “Russisch-Armenien”, restricted to “Mount Takjaltu in the vicinity of Kasikoporan, a village 20 km WSW of Tuzluca, Vilayet Kars, Turkey” by Eiselt (1982) in DAREVSKY & BAKRADZE 1982.

Type locality: Bechebermak, near Caspian Sea.
Reproductionoviparous
TypesLectotype ZISP 1546 (fide Tuniev et al. 2009).
Holotype: lost, was ZSM 1926/0 (lost), female, from "Russisch-Armenien", collected by M. Korb, 1901 [macrospilotus]
DiagnosisDiagnosis: Dorsal scales in 15 rows at midbody; internasal suture usually distinctly shorter than prefrontal suture; males with less than 180 ventrals, females with less than 200; dorsum uniform, unpatterned; collar dlstmct, extends over sides of neck onto throat, ends separated by 3-5 gulars; parietal bar broken into a spot or smudge on each parietal shield, not extending onto upper labials; no dark spot in center of rostral scute. (Leviton et al. 1992)
CommentSynonymy: Maybe synonymous to E. rothi. More extended synonymy in BOULENGER 1894. SCHMIDTLER & SCHMIDTLER (1978) state that all reports of C. collaris from Turkey actually refer to other species (eiselti, rothi, modestus, punctatolineatus). However, the species was later confirmed from Turkey by FRANZEN et al. (1989) and others.

Subspecies: According to Darevsky & Bakradze (1982) and the original description Werner’s subspecies differs from the nominate subspecies in having a longitudinal row of approximately 25–34 dark black-brownish dorsal spots, which are indistinct in the posterior body, and furthermore an indistinct longitudinal lateral row of black spots. The posterior most part of the body is patternless.

Distribution: For a map see Sindaco et al. 2013.
EtymologyThe species is named after the Latin word collaris meaning collar (Lemos-Espinal & Dixon 2013).
