DistributionMadagascar (see comment)

albignaci: Madagascar; Type locality: “Foret tropicale d’Analamazaotra [Périnet], elevation 900 m, Madagascar”
Reproductionoviparous
TypesHolotype: MHNG 279.37 (M), "Guyane?"; M. Pelletier X 1840
Holotype: MNHN 1982.1221 [albignaci]
DiagnosisDiagnosis (genus): see CADLE 1999: 414 (which is the diagnosis of the Exallodontophis but it should be more or less the same for Elapotinus).
CommentType species: Elapotinus picteti is the type species of the genus Elapotinus JAN 1862. Pararhadinaea albignaci DOMERGUE 1984 is the type species of the genus Exallodontophis CADLE 1999. However, Kucharzewski et al. 2014 show that Pararhadinaea albignaci is a synonym of Elapotinus picteti, hence Exallodontophis becomes a synonym of Elapotinus.

Synonymy: See type species. There are no publications about this genus/species in the Zoological Record between 1978 and 1999.

Distribution (picteti): “Habitat unknown” according to BOULENGER 1896. E. picteti was described based on a unique holotype of unknown origin (although suspected to be from Guyana). However, if it is synonymous with Exallodontophis albignaci then it should occur on Madagascar.
EtymologyNamed after Professor François Jules Pictet de la Rive (1809-1872), a Swiss zoologist and paleontologist.

The genus Exallodontophis was nameed after the Greek “exallos” (= quite different, special, distinguished) + “odontos” (= of teeth; from odous, tooth) + ophis (= snake), or "snake of quite different teeth," referring to the unusual maxillar)' dentition. Gender masculine.
