CommentSubgenus: belongs to subgenus Ommateremias.

Synonymy partly after KHALIKOV & ANANJEVA (pers. comm.). Highly variable species (see patterns in CHIRIKOVA & KOLBINZEV 2003). Eremias arguta potanini is nested within arguta (ORLOVA et al. 2012).

Types: For comments on the types of this species (and the subspecies deserti) see BAUER & GÜNTHER 1995.

Type species: Lacerta variabilis PALLAS 1814 is the type species of the genus Eremias WIEGMANN 1834 (fide JEREMCENKO 1999). Szczerbak (1974) considered Eremias velox the type species of genus Eremias. For comments on the types of this species (and Lacerta vittata) see BAUER & GÜNTHER 1995.

Distribution: See map in SMID et al. 2014 for distribution in Iran.

Key: Masroor et al. 2020: 115 provide a key to the Pakistani species of Eremias.

Comparisons: Masroor et al. 2020: 119 provide of Eremias species.

Phylogenetics: see Khan et al. 2020 for a recent molecular phylogeny. This study also showed that the Aspidorhinus, Pareremias, and Rhabderemias subgenera are polyphyletic.
EtymologyThe genus “Eremias is a Greek noun meaning solitary devotee, and is related to Eremia, signifying an isolated place or desert.” (Arnold et al. 1978; Mozaffari and Parham, 2007).
