Comment | Greer et al. synonymized A. poecilopus with A. melanurus [F. Glaw, pers. comm.] Type species: Gongylus melanurus GÜNTHER 1877: 314 is the type species of the genus Flexiseps ERENS et al. 2017. Reference images: see Uetz et al. 2024 for high-resolution reference images for this species. |
Etymology | Named after Greek melanos (μέλανος), black, for the dark color of the species. The genus was named after Latin flexi, meaning ‘long’ and ‘flexible’, and Greek seps, a term often used for elongated lizard-like animals; it makes reference to the overall elongated morphology of most species in this genus, as well as the rather large phenotypic variation encountered in this clade. The gender of the genus name is considered masculine (Erens et al. 2017, supplemement). |
