CommentTaxonomy: Gallotia galloti caesaris (LEHRS 1914) has been elevated to full species status and Gallotia galloti gomerae (BOETTGER & MÜLLER, 1914) transferred to Gallotia caesaris.

BOULENGER 1887 gives DUMÉRIL & BIBRON 1839: 238 as authors. DUMÉRIL & BIBRON 1839 indeed described the species but OUDART published a figure of the species (with its name) somewhat earlier in WEBB & BERTHELOT 1839. Although the text in Webb & Berthelot was apparently written by Gervais, Dubois 1984 established that Oudart (who produced the drawings) is the first describer of G. galloti.

Distribution: Not on El Hierro, La Gomera (fide A. Valido, pers. comm.). A single report from Madeira could not be confirmed so far [Elaphe 18 (2): 82].

Type species: Lacerta galloti OUDART in WEBB & BERTHELOT 1839 is the type species of the genus Gallotia BOULENGER 1916.

Karyotype: Nisi Cerioni et al. 2024.

Reference images: see Uetz et al. 2024 for high-resolution reference images for this species.
EtymologyNamed after D. Gallot, an amateur naturalist in the Canary Islands, who sent a specimen of the species to Paris.

The genus was named after the species.
