Diagnosis | Diagnosis (genus): A genus of the family Gekkonidae that is easily recognized by the large flat imbricate cycloid (fish-scale) body scales that are shed easily—the cycloid scales and most of the underlying dermis can be autotomized; vertical pupil; digits strongly dilated with transverse undivided subdigital lamellae; all digits with a retractile claw; no preanal or femoral pores in males. Comment | Synonymy: KÖHLER et al. 2009 synonymized anomala and modesta with typica. Type species: Geckolepis typicus GRANDIDIER 1867 is the type species of the genus Geckolepis GRANDIDIER 1867. Diversity: LEMME et al. (2013) described other Confirmed Candidate Species, based on genetic differences, which exhibit only little morphological diversity. Behavior: nocturnal Reference images: see Uetz et al. 2024 for high-resolution reference images for this species. |
Etymology | Named after the Latin adjective typicus, supposedly referring to the species' morphology which was considered as being typical for Geckolepis. The genus was named after gecko and Greek lepis = scale, for the unusual scalation in this genus. |
