Comment 
EtymologyFrom the Latin baliola, a word used by Plautus to refer to "bay, red, spotted" (Duméril, 1856), but in turn likely to be derived from the Greek balios (dappled or piebald). (G. Shea, pers. comm., 9 Feb 2024)
