Comment | Illustration on the cover of Herp. Rev. (issue 1), 2004. Type species: Gerrhonotus rhombifer PETERS 1876 is the type species of the genus Coloptychon TIHEN 1949: 584. Phylogenetics: GARCÍA-VÁZQUEZ et al. 2018 found Coloptychon to be nested within Gerrhonotus, hence they recommend to synonymize the two genera. This species is known from only few specimens (Macey et al. 1999); Lamar et al. (2015) state that there is only 1 known specimen. Distribution: see maps in Lamar et al. (2015), Blair et al. 2021. |
Etymology | Named after Latin rhombus, a mathematical figure whose four sides and opposite angles are equal, a rhomb + Latin fero, to bear, carry. [“...Die Oberseite des Kopfes, breite unregelmässig rhomboidale, durch schmale schwarze Zwischenräume von einander getrennte Querbinden, welche auf dem Schwänze sich zu vollständigen Ringen entwickeln, von gelber Farbe...”]. |
