| Diagnosis | Diagnosis: Goniurosaurus luii differs from all other species of Goniurosaurus in having a greatly enlarged row of supraorbital tubercles and a bright-orange as opposed to an ivory to lightyellow or blood-red colored iris. It differs further from G. kuroiwae and G. lichtenfelderi in having deep axillary pockets; lacking expanded and ridged occlusal tooth margins; having a not L 17-116mm s. 97mm) having greatly elongate and thin anterolateral and anteromedial processes of the pterygoid bone; having a posteriorly protracted nuchal loop which sits low on the nape of the neck as opposed to being rounded posteriorly and on the occiput; dark, narrow border surrounding the body bands as opposed to a wide border; and a gracile, splayed body and limb stature as opposed to being more compact and robust. It ditfers further from G. kurotwae in that the scales of the upper eyelids are one-half the size of those on the top of the head as opposed to being equal in size; body tubercles do not increase in size posteriorly; claws are sheathed by four scales as opposed to being unsheathed and surrounded by 6-8 scales; subdigital lamellae wide as opposed to narrow; having preanal pores; and the ultimate phalanges of the pes and manus are elongate and curved downward as opposed to short and straight. It differs further from G. lichtenfelderi in that it has four as opposed to three bands between the nuchal loop and caudal constriction. It differs further from G. araneus (see below) in having granular dorsal body scales as opposed to elongate body scales; fewer preanal pores (18-22 vs. 23-29); much narrower body bands and nuchal loop; darkly mottled ground color of dorsal surfaces of head and body as opposed to being nearly immaculate; ground color of limbs densely speckled with small dark spots as opposed to being nearly immaculate; dark mottling present on lateral portions of belly as opposed to being absent; and juveniles with bright-orange as opposed to white body bands. | Comment | Synonymy: Grismer et al. 2021 consider Goniurosaurus kadoorieorum as a synonym of G. luii. Conservation: G. luii may have been extirpated from its type locality due to commercial or pet hunting but is also now readily available from captive breeders (Science 318: 915 [2006]). Sympatry: G. lichtenfelderi hainanensis. Character table: Zhu et al. 2021 Distribution: see map in Ngo et al. 2023. Reference images: see Uetz et al. 2024 for high-resolution reference images for this species. Abundance (kadoorieorum): only known from its original description (Meiri et al. 2017). Character table (kadoorieorum): Zhu et al. 2021 Distribution (kadoorieorum): see map in Ngo et al. 2023. NCBI taxonID: 2740125 [kadoorieorum] RDB speciesID: 20213 [kadoorieorum] Etymology: G. “kadoorieorum” was named in honour of the Kadoorie brothers, Sir Horace and Lord Lawrence, from Hong Kong, for their life-long support to biodiversity research and conservation in the region. |
