Type locality: “Conecuh River, 1 mile upstream from County Road 4 Bridge, 14 km east of East Brewton, Escambia County, Alabama, USA.”

CommentSynonymy: Praschag et al. 2017 found that G. ernsti, G. gibbonsi, G. pearlensis and G. pulchra are nearly identical genetically and, thus, likely conspecific.


Diet: carnivore.

Habitat: freshwater (lakes, rivers) 
EtymologyThe name ernsti is a patronym honoring North American herpetologist, Dr. Carl H. Ernst (1938-2018), for his contributions to the study of turtles. Ernst was a former supervisor of Jeffrey Lovich. See Anonymous 2019 for an obituary.
