CommentSome subspecies of A. pryeri have been elevated to full species status, e.g. A.p.ishigakiense. 
EtymologyNamed after Henry James Stovin Pryer (1850-1888), lepidopterist who collected specimens in Japan in the late 19th century including the holotype of this snake.
