Type locality: Taygetos mountains near Kalamata

TypesType: BMNH 1940.9.3.46 (and possibly additional specimens). 
DiagnosisDiagnosis (genus): Lizards possessing the following features found only in a minority of other Lacertini: often 27 presacral vertebrae in males, median loop of clavicle always interrupted posteriorly, medial longitudinal scale rows under the tail often a little more laterally expanded than adjoining ones, frequently some sexual dimorphism in dorsal colouring; hemipenis often with traces of an armature. Other more widely distributed features include: head and body markedly depressed but supraocular osteoderms usually complete in adults, nine pre-maxillary teeth in adults, inscriptional ribs usually absent, tail often brightly coloured in juveniles, hemipenial microornamentation of hook-shaped spines (from Arnold et al. 2007: 43). 
CommentType Species: Lacerta graeca Bedriaga, 1886 is the type species of the genus Hellenolacerta ARNOLD et al. 2007. 
EtymologyNamed after the occurrence of the species in Greece.

The genus was named after its occurrence in Greece (Greek “Hellas”) and Latin “lacerta” = lizard.
