fragilis: Somalia (LANZA 1983)

Type locality: Java (designated by LOVERIDGE 1947)
TypesLectotype: MNHN-RA 5135A (1344), Java, presented RMNH (larger of two specimens under 5135), designated by Wells & Wellington (1985). Brygoo (1991) provided measurements for both 5135 and 5135A (the second specimen under the number 5135 as listed by Cogger et al. (1983), the presumed source for the information used by Wells & Wellington). Both have SVL 51mm, but MNHN 5135A has the longer tail (96mm total length vs 84mm total length), and hence 5135A is presumably the specimen that was intended to be designated the lectotype. Syntypes: MNHN-RA 0023, MNHN-RA 2300, MNHN-RA 2312, MNHN-RA 2312A-C, MNHN-RA 2313, MNHN-RA 2313A, MNHN-RA 2314, MNHN-RA 5135 and MNHN-RA 5135A.
Holotype: MCZ 5730 [longiceps]
Syntype: USNM 7429 [Hemidactylus inornatus]
DiagnosisDiagnosis (partial): Vásquez-Restrepo 2018 provide illustrated comparisons between the Colombian Hemidactylus, H. frenatus, H. garnotii, and H. angulatus.

Description (South Myanmar): Adult SVL, females 42–49 mm, males 48–59 mm; TrunkL/SVL 39– 53%, TailL/SVL ~100%, HeadL/SVL 24–28 %, HeadW/HeadL 61–72%. Top of head with small granular scales and occasional small flat tubercles on parietal and temporal areas, Suplab 9–12, Inflab 7–10; body similarly with small granular scales and also widely scattered flat, rounded tubercles, ventrally larger, flat overlapping scales; all digit of fore- and hindfoot well-developed , each with oblong digital pad, lamellae of pads rectangular, medially divided except for terminal one, ForefLm 7–9, HindfLm 8–11. (Zug & Mulcahy 2019)

Coloration (South Myanmar): An individual’s overall body color can change from light grey to medium brown, usually with darker stripes on face from nostril through eye to ear, occasionally dark stripe from upper lip on to side of body for variable distances; underside light from whitish to beige. (Zug & Mulcahy 2019)
CommentDistribution: Not listed for Honduras and Belize by KÖHLER (2000). DUMÉRIL & BIBRON (1836) give as type locality a whole range of places including South Africa, Mauritius, Madagascar, etc. In the Pacific H. frenatus and H. garnotii are sympatric only in Hawaii, the Marquesas, and New Caledonia. H. frenatus may have displaced H. garnotii in several instances (BAUER & VINDUM 1990).
The arrival of H. frenatus in the Mascarene islands decimated a radiation of six species of Nactus geckos, three now being entirely extinct and the remainder limited to relict populations on the offshore islets of Mauritius (Arnold, 2000; Cole et al., 2005). South American and Galápagos haplotypes are identical to those from Hawaii and Papua New Guinea, suggesting a common Melanesian origin for both Hawaii and South America. Literature records suggest that H. frenatus arrived in Colombia around the mid-‘90s, dispersed south into Ecuador in less than five years, and arrived in the Galápagos about one decade later (Torres-Carvajal 2015).

Original description in Amarasinghe et al. 2009.

Synonymy: Sometimes Schlegel is cited as the describer, who mentioned the species as a communication from H. Boie (”par M. Boïé”), without any details, hence Schlegel’s name is a nomen nudum. However, the real authors are Duméril & Bibron, 1836 who ascribed the name to Schlegel and stated that this was the name under which the species was listed in the Leiden museum. This apparently is true, but Schlegel is not responsible for the description as published in D&B III:366 (M. Hoogmoed, pers. comm., 2 Sep 2014).
EtymologyThe specific epithet is derived from the Latin word frenum, meaning "bridle or bit." The name pertains to the dusky streaks on the sides of the head between the eyes and the nostrils.
