Tubercles in 16—20 (14—22) longitudinal series. Males with 6 — 8 femoral pores on each side. Color grey, with several dark bands across the back, the bands shaped somewhat like two crescents back to back, thus X- Markings frequently variable or indistinct. (2| in), tail 75 mm. (3 in). The above description is taken from 24 specimens, 8 males and 16 females.” (from Gleadow 1887). Diagnosis (murrayi clade). The Hemidactylus murrayi clade is known from scattered localities across peninsular India (Fig. 1) besides being presumably introduced across southeast Asia (Bauer et al. 2010b; Lajmi et al. 2016). This group contains six species; H. chipkali, H. murrayi, H. treutleri, a divergent unnamed lineage from Maharashtra, H. chikhaldaraensis sp. nov. and H. sankariensis sp. nov. (both species described below). The H. murrayi clade can be diagnosed by an SVL of 50.8–74.2 mm, dorsal tuberculation that includes strongly keeled tubercles in 13–19 more or less regular longitudinal rows, a series of 6–15 femoral pores separated by 4–8 scales, two or three postcloacal spurs, an irregular dorsal colour pattern of dark spots or broken markings, some lighter markings on brown ground colouration, and a banded tail (from Agarwal et al. 2019: 443). |
Comment | Synonymy: previously synonymized with H. brooki but revalidated by Lajmi et al. 2016. The status remains unclear because the types are lost. Distribution: see map in LAJMI et al. 2016. Similar species: H. brooki |
Etymology | Named after James A. Murray, a British Zoologist who was a Member of the Bombay Natural History Society and Anthropological Society of Bombay, a manager at the Victoria Natural History Institute and curator at the Kurrachee (now Karachi, Pakistan) Municipal Library and Museum. |
