CommentType species: Lamprophis modestus DUMÉRIL, BIBRON & DUMÉRIL 1854: 429 is the type species of the genus Hormonotus HALLOWELL 1857.

Phylogenetics: Marques et al. 2018 listed Hormonotus under Colubridae.

EtymologyProbably named after Latin modestus, restrained, mild; modest; reserved, possibly for the small size or inconspicuous coloration.

The genus was named after Greek hormos (ὅρμος), a cord, chain + Greek notos (νῶτος), back [“…ὅρμος, a chain, and νῶτος, back…”].
