Type species: Thalassophis anomala SCHMIDT 1852: 81 is the type species of the genus Thalassophis SCHMIDT 1852.
EtymologyThe species epithet, anomalous, comes Latin, borrowed from Ancient Greek anṓmalos, which means "not uniform, unequal, inconsistent, irregular". Its reference is its head shape and body coloring that makes the species different than other sea snakes. Accoring to Schmidt, "This snake differs at first glance from all known sea snakes, both in terms of its distinctive coloring and its very peculiar head structure."
