Comment | Distribution: see Bernstein et al. 2022: 562 (Fig. 1) for a map. Synonymy: This species was previously considered to be H. plumbea. rossman & Scott (1968) synonymized Helicops wettsteini Amaral, 1929 with Enhydris plumbea. David & Vogel 2024 found that wettsteini is a senior synonym of murphyi. Type locality (wettsteini): “San Juan de viñas (1000 ms alt.), base of volcano turialba, central Costa rica”, now turrialba volcano, Cartago Province, Costa Rica (in error) |
Etymology | Named after John C. Murphy, who has dedicated decades of his research career to investigating and describing homalopsid snakes. |
