DiagnosisDiagnosis (genus): Lizards possessing the following features found only in a minority of other Lacertini: rostral and frontonasal scales frequently in contact, one postnasal scale, supranasal and anterior loreal scales often contacting each other, no microchromosomes, number of macrochromosomes 36 or fewer, reduced in some cases to 26 or 24 in males and 25 or 23 in females, embryos often partly developed at egg-laying. Other more widely distributed features include: head and body depressed and supraocular osteoderms often fenestrated in adults, seven to nine premaxillary teeth, usual number of presacral vertebrae 26 in males; inscriptional ribs present or absent, tail brightly coloured in hatchlings, hemipenial microornamentation consisting of crown-shaped tubercles or hook-shaped spines (from Arnold et al. 2007: 45).
CommentType Species: Lacerta muralis, var. monticola Boulenger, 1905 is the type species of the genus Iberolacerta ARRIBAS 1999 (not 1997, as sometimes claimed, see ICZN Opinion 2461).

Synonymy: Lacerta monticola cantabrica is a synonym of I. m. monticola fide O. Arribas, pers. comm. 31 Dec 2020.

Karyotypes: Naveira et al. 2023
EtymologyThe species name, ‘monticola’, is Latin for ‘inhabitant of the mountains’ (Latin “colere” = inhabiting).

The genus was named after its occurrence in Iberia and Latin “lacerta” = lizard.
