CommentType species: Kentropyx calcaratus SPIX 1825 is the type species of the genus Kentropyx SPIX 1825.

Both Boulenger (1885) and Goeldi (1902) used “Kentropyx intermedius” in the sense of K. borckiana, which does not occur in Brazil.

Synonymy that of PETERS & DONOSO-BARROS 1970, modified after GALLAGHER & DIXON 1980.
EtymologyEtymology (genus): Kentropyx is a feminine noun in the nominative singular derived from the Greek words kentron meaning spur and pyxos meaning box. The name is likely an allusion to the preanal spurs in species of this genus.
