DiagnosisDiagnosis (genus): characters unique to the genus are: surface of the subdigital lamellae keeled; smooth tail scales; without caudal autotomy; tail slightly longer than body; no contact between orbital semi-circles; dorsal coloration pattern with defined vertebral spots, “shark teeth” or “fleur-de-lis” shaped (Cei, 1986; Frost et al., 2001, Laspiur et al. 2007).

Type Species: Leiosaurus Bellii DUMÉRIL & BIBRON 1837 is the type species of the genus Leiosaurus DUMÉRIL & BIBRON 1837.

Phylogenetics: The genera Diplolaemus, Leiosaurus, and Pristidactylus have been combined in the Leiosaurae clade (Morando et al. 2015). 
EtymologyNamed after Thomas Bell (1792-1880), a British naturalist and dental surgeon who worked at Guy's Hospital, London (1816-1860). He became Professor of Zoology at King's College (1834) and described many ofthe reptiles Darwin collected. He was a friend of Gray and President of the Linnean Society (Beolens et al. 2011).
