Etymology | “This species is dedicated to the “Huarpes Millcayac”, one of the original peoples who inhabited the area of northern Mendoza and San Luis as well as the south of San Juan where this species is distributed. The Huarpes were very tall and thin, they lived a sedentary life dedicated to basketry. Currently, they live in the area of the dried up Guanacache Lagoons, Creole communities that can prove their direct Huarpe affiliation; the Argentine national survey of 2010, showed that currently there are 12,710 first-generation Huarpe people in the provinces of Mendoza, San Juan and San Luis, of which 2,610 reside in communities”. |
