Diagnosis
CommentGroup: Belongs to the wiegmanni group of Liolaemus.

The L. wiegmannii group (or complex) is also known as “sand lizards” because of its specializations for living with high temperatures and xerophytic vegetation, such as among desert dunes (Abdala 2007). This group includes 11 species: L. arambarensis, azarai, cuyumhue, gardeli, lutzae, multimaculatus, occipitalis, rabinoi, riojanus, salinicola, scapularis, and wiegmannii. The latter species is considered the least specialized of the group because it is not restricted to sandy environments (Laurent 1983, 1984; Halloy et al. 1998; Etheridge 2000, Verrastro et al. 2017).

Distribution: VERRASTRO et al. 2003 conclude that Brazilian populations of L. wiegmanni are in fact L. arambarensis and L. wiegmanni doesn’t occur in Brazil. Not in Paraguay (fide Cacciali et al. 2016). The species reported by Alvarez & Lions (1996, HR 27: 32), from Isla Yacyreta appears to be L. azarai.
EtymologyNamed after A. Fr. August Wiegmann (1802-1841), zoologist in Berlin.
