Diagnosis	Diagnosis:– Small, short tailed species with heterogeneous dorsal scalation and a discontinuous vertebral crest. No enlarged scales below the tympanum; no row of enlarged submaxillaries; anterior edge of the gular pouch with weakly enlarged scales. H. spinipes differs from boydii by the absence of plates and conical scales below the tympanum (vs. present); dilophus by the form of nuchal and dorsal crest (triangular spiny scales vs. lanceolate); all other species by a heterogeneous dorsal scalation (Manthey & Denzer 2006: 24).
Comment	Synonymy partly after COGGER 1983.
Etymology	Presumably named after the Latin spina (spine) plus pes (foot), alluding to the spinose lamellae under the toes. (G. Shea, pers. comm., 9 Feb 2024)
