CommentFor a discussion of nomenclatorial issues concerning the genera Lycodon and Ophites see Zhao & Adler (who listed this species under Ophites). Juveniles can be confused with the venomous Bungarus candidus.

Original description from BOIE 1827: “[Lycodon] subcinctus Reinw. cf. Erp. de Java. Seba I. tab. 109 fig. 7. Russec. T. II. pl. 41. Oculi parvis, cauda quincunciali, scutello orbitali anteriori nullo, loreo elongato, squamis per series 17 dispositis, rhombeis, apice truncatis, dorsalibus posterioribus nonnullis carinatis, caeteris laevibus. Totus e fusco badius, subtus pallidior, capite subtus collari interrupto fasciisque nonnullis obsoletis albidis. 208-227 [cross sign] 62 - 89. An dem skellettierten Kopfe fand ich den dritten Zahn im Oberkiefer isoliert und viel größer als alle übrigen, in dem Unterkiefer sind der 3te und 4te Zahn größer. Das os mastoideum sehr klein.”
