Diagnosis | Diagnosis: Nostril pierced near the rear edge of the nasal, which is followed by a postnasal that is well separated from the first supralabial. Dorsal scales with single apical pits in 17-17-15 rows, the reduction taking place well before the vent; ventrals 183-200 in males, 189-204 in females, subcaudals 33-40 in males, 28-33 in females (Broadley 1996: 16). Coloration: Black, each dorsal scale tipped with white or with extensive heavy white vermiculation, specimens from eastern Zimbabwe have a pink band round the snout. The ventrum is usually uniform dark brown to black, but may exhibit irregular light patches (Broadley 1996: 16). Skull: elongate with parietal crests well separated posteriorly (Broadley 1996: 16). Size. Largest male (LR 855 - Tsbipise, Transvaal) 323 + 46 = 369 mm, largest female (TMP 44574 - Ohrigstad, Transvaal) 389 + 44 = 433 mm (Broadley 1996: 16). |
