DistributionAustralia (Queensland)

Type locality: Cooktown, Queensland
Reproductionoviparous (phylogenetic imputation, fide Zimin et al. 2022)
TypesHolotype: MCZ 6476
DiagnosisDiagnosis: L. aeratus is a large (maximum SV length 39 mm) Lygisaurus with a moveable eyelid con taining a large disc. It can be confused with L. rococo from which it may be distinguished by ear lobules (in L. aeratus, many sharp lobules vs in L. rococo, 1-5 flat lobules), supralabials (6, occasionally 5, with 4th or 5th entering the eye vs 1, with 5th which is grooved, entering the eye), and midbody scale count (19-24 vs 27-30), number of scales between chin and vent (43-54 vs 51-59). Some spirit specimens of L. aeratus can also be confused with specimens of L. foliorum (Ingram and Covacevich, 1988: 340).
CommentApparently not listed in COGGER 1983.
EtymologyPresumably named after the Latin aeris (bronze/brass) plus the suffix -atus (made of), relating to the coloration. (G. Shea, pers. comm., 9 Feb 2024)
