| Diagnosis | Diagnosis: “Membre du groupe de 1. picturatus (Peters, 1870), où il se rapproche de L. williamsi Loveridge, 1952, espèce endémique de la forêt Kimbosa, à 200 km au sud-ouest (LAMBERT, 1985; BROADLEY & HOWEL, 1991), mais dont seulement, aussi, un mâle (MZ 51500) a été décrit (LOVERIDGE, 1952; PASTEUR, 1964). Les deux mâles montrent une couleur deo fond bleue sur toute la face dorsale du corps, avec absence d'un avant-train de couleur différente délimité par une brusque démarcation transversale comme c'est typiquement le cas chez les mâles de L. luteopicturatus Pasteur, 1964, (dos habituellement bleu) et dans les deux sexes chez L. picturatus (dos gris à brun). Ils diffèrent par les caractères rassemblés dans le Tableau l, où le trait 4 est propre à L. williamsi parmi les lygodactyles non malgaches, tandis que le trait l lui est propre dans le groupe de genres tout entier [from PASTEUR 1995]. |
| Comment | Synonymy: Lygodactylus kimhowelli appears to be a replacement name for L. howelli. However, Pasteur did not say that explicitly in his (French) paper, and there appear to be 2 different type specimens for the two species, so this situation needs further clarification. |
| Etymology | Named after K.M. Howell (1945-2022), in recognition of his major contributions to Tanzanian herpetology. For an obituary see Stuart et al. 2023. |
