Type locality. Benguerua Island, Mozambique.  
TypesHolotype: NMZB 10031 
DiagnosisDiagnosis. Lower eyelid scaly; pterygoid teeth present; frontoparietals paired; a discrete supranasal above an entire nasal shield; digits pentadactyle; dorsal scales tricarinate in juveniles, becoming smooth in adults, 24-26 midbody scale rows; four supralabials anterior to subocular; one or two lanceolate lobules on upper ~nterior border of ear opening; subdigitallamellae beneath fourth toe 15-18, beneath fIfth toe 9-11. Maximum recorded snout-vent length 100 mm. Light grey brown above, the lateral scales dark-tipped; vent rum white. 
CommentLygosoma lanceolatum was preliminarily included in the genus Mochlus sensu Freitas et al. 2019, but they did not have DNA available and were thus not conclusively able to assign the species to Mochlus. 
EtymologyThe name lanceolatum refers to the long lanceolate ear lobule which is diagnostic for this species.
