CommentGRISMER 1999 elevated barbouri to full (evolutionary) species status.

The species has been preliminarily assigned to Coluber following the synonymization of Masticophis with Coluber by Utiger et al. (2005). 
EtymologyNamed after Thomas Barbour (1884-1946), Associate Curator of Reptiles and Amphibians (1923), and, later, Director (1927) of the Museum of Comparative Zoology at Harvard.
