CommentSynonymy after CEI 1993. FREITAS 2014 lists Thamnodynastes nattereri (Mikan 1828) as valid while WALLACH et al. 2014 listed it as synonym of T. pallidus.

Distribution: Boos 1984 reported one record from Trinidad which has not been confirmed. See map in Nogueira et al. 2019.

Terra typica: India (GÜNTHER 1858, in error)

Habitat: partly arboreal (Harrington et al. 2018).

Type species: Tomodon strigatus GÜNTHER 1858: 52 is the type species of the genus Mesotes JAN 1863. 
EtymologyNamed after Latin striga, row or strip of anything + Latin atus, having the nature of. (GÜNTHER 1858, Esteban Lavilla, pers. comm., April 2024)

The genus was probably named after Greek mesotes (μεσότης), a middle; state between two extremes.
