DiagnosisDiagnosis: “Diese Giftschlange hat den Kopf einer Vipera, die Vertiefung zwischen Auge und Nasenlöcher wie Trigonocephalus, die ganzen Schuppen unter dem Schwanz wie Echis, dabei die vorderen Zähne des Unterkiefers besonders lang. Vielleicht ist es nur eine junge Crotalus mit unentwickelter Klapper” [original diagnosis of Rüppell 1845: 313].

Synonymy partly after PETERS & OREJAS-MIRANDA 1970. Previously A. mexicanus and A. occiduus have been considered as subspecies of A. nummifer. Specimens from Guatemala that were previously described as A. nummifer have been molecularly grouped with A. olmec based on Castoe et al. 2003

Habitat: terrestrial

Distribution: not in Costa Rica (as stated in KÖHLER 2003). The populations from Panama, Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, S Belize, Nicaragua, Costa Rica are now included in A. mexicanus. For a map of localities see Tepos-Ramírez et al. 2021: Fig. 1. 
EtymologyThe specific epithet is derived from the Latin word nummus, meaning "coin or piece of money," and the suffix -fer, meaning "bear," probably in reference to the shape of the dorsal blotches (LEMOS-ESPINAL & DIXON 2013).
