Synonymy: after Nascimento et al. 2024.

Distribution: See map in Nascimento et al. 2024: Fig. 11

Similar species: Micrurus bonita and Micrurus anibal are closely related to M. ibiboboca and may be subspecies of that species. Even though their hemipenes looks different, they are morphologically very similar. 
EtymologyNamed after Anibal Rafael Melgarejo Gimenez, a Uruguayan herpetologist and toxicologist based in Brazil, who contributed to the studies of Brazilian snakes, including coral snakes.
