Type locality: rock outcrop 5 km west of the South Alligator River on the Pine Creek to El Sharana road in the Northern Territory.

TypesHolotype: NTM R9877 (as R9817), collected by M.E. King & P. King, 22.v.1981. See Horner (1999) for correction of registration number of holotype. 
DiagnosisDiagnosis:-A large dorsoventrally compressed Oedura with a diamond shaped head, elongate body and wide, flat tail with a pointed mobile tip. This species is distinguished from all other Oedura by its striking coloration, back and tail pattern. The head and dorsal surface of the body have an irregular series of bright lemon yellow and light brown spots scattered over a jet black surface. The black tail has a number of narrow white bands along its length. Oedura marmorata, which is the species most similar to 0. gemmnatain its morphological characteristics, has a banded back pattern [from KING & GOW 1983].

EtymologyThe specific name gemmata comes from the Latin for gem or jewel.
