Diagnosis 
CommentSynonymy: fide BLANC 1977 and SCHLÜTER 2013.

Type species: Oplurus torquatus CUVIER 1829: 48 is the type species of the genus Oplurus CUVIER 1829. The subsequent designation by Fitzinger 1843: 17, as Oplurus sebae Duméril and Bibron, 1837, is invalid (fide FROST, Opluridae, unpublished). 
EtymologyNamed after Georges Leopold Chretien Frederic Dagobert Baron Cuvier (1769-1832), better known by his pen name Georges Cuvier.
