DiagnosisDiagnosis (genus): see Cunha & Nascimenta 1983 (in Portuguese) Diagnosis (genus): The species of Oxyrhopus share an undivided cloacal scale, paired subcaudals, a temporal formulae of 1+2 or 2+3, 7-10 infralabials and 7-8 supralabials, as well as a deeply bilobed, bicalyculate and bicapitated hemipenis, also presenting enlarged and well-developed lateral spines, in three or four rows, usually with a nude area in the lateral region of each lobe (Peters & Orejas-Miranda 1970, Zaher 1999); these characteristics, however, are not exclusive to Oxyrhopus, and the genus remains without a reliable morphological diagnosis (Gonzales et al. 2020).

CommentIllustration: Fig. 18 in VILLA et al. 1988.

Nomenclature: Smith et al. (1986) chose O. petolarius as the correct name. See Bailey (1986) for a contrary view. This matter hinges on whether the subsequent spellings of pethola and petalarius by Linné (1766) and Gmelin (1788) are unjustified emendations or incorrect subsequent spellings (ICZN article 35). If the former, the conclusion of Smith et al. (1986) prevails; if the latter is correct then Bailey's interpretation is valid. [from SAVAGE 2002: 576].

Type species: Coluber Petola LINNAEUS 1758 is the type species of the genus Oxyrhopus WAGLER 1830 (designated by COPE 1860: 185).

Synonymy after PETERS & OREJAS-MIRANDA 1970. McCranie 2011 listed O. p. sebae as a synonym of P. petola (but did not discuss the validity outside Honduras).

Subspecies after Bailey 1970. LYNCH (2009) refused to accept subspecies because the “use of subspecies names implies more than we know”.

Appearance: Oxyrhopus petola mimicks Micrurus diastema and M. limbatus. Oxyrhopus petola may be so completely melanistic that inexperienced persons confuse them with adult Clelia clelia (which does not exhibit preocular-frontal contact).

Key: Gonzales et al. 2020 present a key to the Oxyrhopus species of the central Andes.

Comparisons: Bernardo et al. 2012: 144 present a table of scalation characters across all species of Oxyrhopus.
EtymologyThe specific name petola may be derived from the Greek petalos (broad) in reference to the relatively broad red bands found in this species (McCranie 2011: 360).

The genus was named after Greek oxyrropos (ὀξύρροπος), turning quickly. ["…ὀξύρροπος qui celeriter repit…"].
