DistributionRepublic of South Africa (S Little Namaqualand, Cape Province), Angola, Namibia, Botswana

Type locality: Interior of South Africa.  
Reproductionoviparous 
TypesType: BMNH 1865.5.4.103 (and possibly additional specimens)
Holotype: PEM R16066 (formerly AMG 6458) [frater]

CommentP. formosus is listed by KLUGE (1993) as a valid species with question mark, but it is listed as subspecies of rugosus by RÖSLER 2000. LAMB & BAUER (2000) elevated P. rugosus barnardi and P. rugosus formosus to full species status. Distribution not yet corrected for elevation of barnardi and formosus to species status. 
EtymologyPresumably named after the Latin rugosus (rough), but also wrinkled.
