Diagnosis 
CommentStatus unclear. Not listed in BROADLEY 1998 for the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Broadley (1989) also suggested to include Afroblepharus seydeli in the synonymy of A. tancredii, based on the same number of midbody scale rows (20-22) and prefrontals in broad contact.

Has been confused with Panaspis smithii (see BROADLEY 1989; BROADLEY 2001, pers. comm. considers P. smithii as valid species).

Panaspis smithii, The Upemba Snake-eyed Skink is probably endemic to the P.N.U. and environs at low altitudes (Witte 1953). It is readily distinguished from P. seydeli by having the prefrontals separated or meeting at a point and having 24-26 midbody scale rows. It also resembles P. wahlbergii in having white lateral stripes. In his list of material, Witte (1936) included MRAC 6774 from Lodja, in northern Kasai province 600 km northwest of the P.N.U., but in view of the wide gap, this specimen should be re-examined [BROADLEY & COTTERILL 2004]. 
EtymologyAfroablepharus seydeli has been named after the collector of the type, Charles Henri Victor Seydel (* 29.9.1873 Brussels, † 9.1960 Elisabethville, Belgian Congo). See link for biographical details. (Glenn Shea, pers. comm., 2 Feb 2024)

Ablepharus moeruensis was named after the type locality, Lac Moero (= Lake Mweru].
