Distributionnorth-central and eastern Haiti, east to Peninsula de Samaná, República Dominicana; inland to Hato Mayor, Monte Plata, San Cristóbal, Peravia, Monseñor Nouel, and La Vega provinces.

Type locality: 8 km E Gaspar Hernandez, Espaillat Province, Republica Dominicana (19.631, -70.220; 17 m).

Diagnosis 
CommentDistribution: for a map see Schools & Hedges 2024: 134 (Fig. 49) 
EtymologyNamed after Greek melanos (μέλανος), black, and Greek chroa = surface of the body, skin, or chrotos = skin (color), for its dark metallic brown dorsal ground color.
