CommentSubspecies: Phelsuma lineata leiogaster MERTENS 1973 has been synonymized with P. lineata by KLUGE 1993 but is listed here as a subspecies of P. modesta. Phelsuma lineata dorsivittata MERTENS 1964 has been elevated to full species status. Phelsuma lineata punctulata MERTENS 1970 has been elevated to full species.

Species grup: Member of the Phelsuma lineata (phenetic) group (GLAW, VENCES & ZIEGLER 1999).

Synonymy and subspecies originally after WERMUTH 1965. Recently, chloroscelis and bifasciata have been suggested to be synonyms of P. lineata (Hallmann, cited in ANDERS 2008).

EtymologyNamed after Latin “linea”, meaning stripe or line.

P. l. bombetokensis was named after its type locality.

P. l. elanthana was named after Greek elanthanos = hidden, unknown, undiscovered, in allusion to the fact that the taxon was known before but remained undescribed until 1996.
