Comment | “Phesluma hielscheri sp. n. is a medium sized species (total length more than 160 mm). Because of it´s brilliant coloration it belongs to the "green species" of the genus Phelsuma. The combination of five characters easily distinguishes Phelsuma hielscheri sp. n. from all other species of the genus Phelsuma: total length > 160 mm, nostril not in contact with rostral, ventralia and dorsalia keeled, dark lateral stripe on gular and neck present, and ventral side of the tail light with dark spots.” (from the abstract of RÖSLER, OBST & SEIPP 2001). Max length: 170 mm (males; females: 150 mm). |
Etymology | Named after Michael Hielscher, one of the co-discoverers of the new species, who was shot by Malagasy soldiers and died shortly after the gecko was found. |
