CommentSynonymy mainly that of PETERS et al. 1970. C. ampuedai has been synonymized with P. vertebralis by UZZELL (1973) and DOAN (2003). Some populations of P. vertebralis have been assigned to P. paramuno. 
EtymologyApparently named after the Latin vertebra (backbone) plus the suffix -alis (belonging to), in reference to the vertebral stripe.

Prionodactylus ampuedai has been named after the collector, Ramón Ampueda.
