Type locality: Isla Las Animas, Baja California.

TypesHolotype: SDNHM = SDSNH 44623, adult male; paratype SDNHM = SDSNH 
DiagnosisDIAGNOSIS (apricus). Average snout-vent length of 48.7 mm, differing from P. xanti of Isla San Jose, having a significantly higher number of ventral scales, dorsal tubercle rows, paravertebral tubercles, and lower number of interorbitals, snout scales, and scales bordering the postmentals: from P. bugastrolepis in having a higher number of ventral scales and lower number of snout scales, interorbitals, dorsal tubercle rows, paravertebral tubercles, and scales bordering the post-mentals (Dixon 1966: 450). 
CommentSubspecies and synonyms: P. apricus has been considered as a synonym of P. xantiby some previous authors but was resurrected by RAMÍREZ-REYES et al. 2020.

EtymologyNamed after John Xantus a.k.a Louis de Vesey (1825-1894), Hungarian-born naturalist who arrived in the US in 1850 and then had various jobs.
